State-owned postal firm PT Pos Indonesia entered into a
cooperation agreement Thursday with PT Gading Sari Indonesia, the local
subsidiary of a Malaysian logistics firm, for the purpose of boosting
PT Pos's logistics business.
The agreement was signed by the chief executive officer of PT Gading
Sari, Taufick D. Mochtar (second left), and PT Pos's director of
operations, Soebandi (third left).
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Dato Sri Doktor Hilmi Yahya, a
senior official from the Malaysian Finance Ministry (left), PT Pos's
president director, Hana Suryana (second right), and State Minister for
State Enterprises Sugiharto
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Sugiharto said that the strategic
alliance would accelerate PT Pos's recovery after it suffered Rp 51
billion in losses in 2005.
"It is time for PT Pos Indonesia to expand its business from a
traditional postal service to IT-based services," said Sugiharto.
He said that the postal service had started to be left behind,
especially on the global market, so that Indonesia had to adapt to the
change.
PT Gading Sari Indonesia will invest up to US$70 million in helping PT
Pos develop its transportation, logistics and communications systems,
as well as to modernize its warehousing.
PT Gading Sari Indonesia is a subsidiary of Gading Sari Aviation
Services Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a logistics and helicopter-rental company
owned by the royal family of Malaysia's Pahang State.
"We need a strategic partner like PT Gading Sari Indonesia to expand
our services into the logistics sector," the business communications
director of PT Pos, San Herib, told reporters.
He added that PT Pos was targeting Rp 330 billion in revenue from the
logistics sector this year.
"PT Pos Indonesia has 3,000 outlets all over Indonesia. We only have to
increase our information technology services and improve
professionalism," chief executive officer of PT Gading Sari Indonesia,
Taufick, said.
The two companies are targeting not only the domestic market, but also
those of other ASEAN countries.
Taufick said that if the collaborative project went well, it was
possible that PT Gading Sari Indonesia would invest a further $500
million in the years to come.
He said that his company was trying to develop logistics cooperation
among companies in all of the ASEAN countries. After Indonesia, Gading
Sari Aviation Services Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. planned to take soundings in
Vietnam and China.
