The computer programming
convention of using 2 instead of 4 digits to represent calendar
year will cause considerable difficulties in many automated environment.
Initially this was viewed as mainly an IT issue. But now it has
become evident that Y2K problem has extended itself into vendor,
business-supplier management and embedded system used in a variety
of applications.
If nothing is done to
overcome this problem, it has been estimated that up to 70% of the
IT applications will malfunction leading into the year 2000. While
about 15% of the date sensitive embedded system will fail or malfunction.
For an organization,
especially a large one, the work load in investigating all of the
equipments can be quite significant. For this reasons, it is especially
important to focus the effort on those equipments that are critical
to the business going concern and the safety of the working environment.
To promote Y2K solution,
SLR has cooperated with international consulting companies to provide
consultancy services to both government and commercial organizations,
which seek to initiate their respective Y2K compliance program.
